film noir

Film Noir is traditionally Black and White – attributed mostly by the fact that the genre originated in Black and White films and Cinema of the time.  Black and White Noir Photography also began using silver gelatin film and the aesthetic is iconic. Using low-key lighting as well as emphasizing shadows and harsh lighting, the film noir look captures a darker side of photography. Shadows are a big part of the film noir look and is a well used technique even today. Dramatic light has three main features: hard light, focused or patterned light and contrast.

for this assignment, I used an iPhone 13 pro and worked with angles, shadows and the setting sun in an attempt to add drama to these photographs. I chose the Hollywood Theater as my subject - I felt that this was a great choice because the marquee of dazzling lights added a little drama and grandeur to the overall aesthetic.
